The Affiliated Hospital of the Medical Department of the University of Tokyo originated from the first vaccination institute (vaccinia vaccination institute) opened in present-day Tokyo in the late Edo era, and has been leading the development of Japanese medicine and medical industry for more than 150 years. The Affiliated Hospital of the Medical Department of the University of Tokyo is composed of diagnosis and treatment departments (6 departments, 37 diagnosis and treatment departments), central facilities departments (38 departments), and clinical research departments (7 departments). The hospital has 3888 employees and 1217 beds (1163 general wards and 54 psychiatric wards, as of the end of 2012). In 2012, the number of inpatients was 392200, the number of outpatients was 754372, the number of surgical operations was 10752, the number of deliveries was 855, and the number of emergency patients was 18505. It is one of the few large comprehensive hospitals in Japan that integrates medical treatment, teaching and scientific research.

Hospital characteristics

The clinical medical research and cutting-edge medical technology development of our hospital have received extensive attention from all walks of life in Japan. The "22nd Century Medical Center" undertakes the important task of transformation research of the Medical Department and the Research Department of the Medical Department of Tokyo University, develops new diagnostic methods and treatment methods, verifies and popularizes treatment methods, conducts research on preventive medicine, medical policies, medical devices and equipment, and actually applies them to clinical and medical services. As of 2013, 12 advanced medical projects are under way. The hospital plans to build the clinical research center of Dongda Hospital with the most advanced research functions in 2018, and continue to carry out scientific research activities as the world's top clinical medical research base.

In order to turn the hospital into an international key hospital, the Affiliated Hospital of the University of Tokyo Medical Department set up an international diagnosis and treatment department in 2012.
